Route Overview
The adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you’ll enter the lush rainforest and make your way to Mandara Hut. Experience the wonders of the rainforest as you ascend through the moorland, reaching Horombo Hut on the second day. Take a well-deserved acclimatization day at Horombo Hut to prepare your body for the challenging summit push.
Next, you’ll hike to Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt. Start the ascent towards Uhuru Peak, commencing in the early hours of the morning. Trek through the darkness, guided by the light of your headlamp, until you witness the sun’s first rays at Gilman’s Point. Continue along the crater rim to reach the iconic Uhuru Peak, where you’ll stand atop the Roof of Africa.
After capturing memories and celebrating your achievement, descend back to Horombo Hut for a night of rest and rejuvenation. On the final day, make your way through the rainforest, passing by Mandara Hut, and reach Marangu Gate. Collect your well-earned summit certificates and bid farewell to the mountain.

Full Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860 meters) to Mandara Hut (2,700 meters)
After breakfast and a briefing at Marangu Gate, start the trek through the lush rainforest.
Trek for approximately 3-4 hours, ascending gradually along a well-maintained trail.
Arrive at Mandara Hut, situated in a beautiful forest clearing.
Rest, enjoy a hot meal, and overnight at Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700 meters) to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters)
Leave Mandara Hut after breakfast and continue the trek.
Trek through the moorland, with glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s summit in the distance.
After 5-6 hours of trekking, reach Horombo Hut.
Relax, savor the panoramic views, and rest at Horombo Hut.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720 meters)
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, essential for a successful summit attempt.
Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or explore the surroundings to gain altitude and adjust to the elevation.
Enjoy the stunning views, rest, and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) to Kibo Hut (4,703 meters)
Depart Horombo Hut and ascend through the alpine desert terrain.
Trek for about 6-7 hours, passing by the last water point.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, a basic but comfortable accommodation near the base of the summit.
Prepare your gear, rest, and have an early dinner.
Get a few hours of sleep before the summit attempt.
Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703 meters) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) and descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters)
Begin the summit attempt around midnight, equipped with headlamps.
Trek in the darkness, following the switchback trail known as the Gilman’s Point route.
Reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters) at the edge of the crater rim, just before sunrise.
Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your accomplishment, take photos, and enjoy the breathtaking views.
Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments.
Continue descending to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night.
Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) to Marangu Gate (1,860 meters) and departure
After breakfast, begin the final descent through the rainforest.
Trek for about 5-6 hours, passing through Mandara Hut along the way.
Arrive at Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates.
Say goodbye to your guides and porters, and transfer back to your accommodation in Arusha/Moshi.
