Route Overview
Embark on an unforgettable wilderness expedition as you conquer Kilimanjaro on the Rongai Route. This less-crowded and scenic route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, offering a unique perspective and panoramic views. Over the course of 6-7 days, you’ll traverse diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, and witness the incredible beauty of Mawenzi Peak. The journey begins at the Rongai Gate, where you’ll meet your experienced guide and porters. As you ascend through the rainforest, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility and serenity, surrounded by the untouched wilderness. The route gradually leads you into the moorland zone, with stunning vistas unfolding along the way. After reaching the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn Camp, an acclimatization day is scheduled to ensure your body adjusts to the high altitude. You can take this opportunity to rest or opt for an invigorating hike to Mawenzi Peak, soaking in breathtaking panoramic views. As you continue towards Kibo Hut, situated at the base camp, the anticipation builds for the summit attempt. The midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak begins, where you’ll witness a mesmerizing sunrise at Gilman’s Point before pushing forward to the summit. Standing at Uhuru Peak, you’ll savor a profound sense of accomplishment and be rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas stretching as far as the eye can see.
Full Itinerary
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950 meters) to Simba Camp (2,650 meters)
Meet your guide and porters at the Rongai Gate
Begin the trek through lush rainforest vegetation
Reach Simba Camp for overnight camping
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,600 meters)
Continue the trek, entering the moorland zone
Pass the Second Cave and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape
Arrive at Kikelewa Camp for overnight camping
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 meters)
Trek through the alpine desert, crossing the Third Cave
Ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located near the picturesque Mawenzi Peak
Overnight camping at Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Take a rest day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp to acclimatize to the high altitude
Optional acclimatization hike to the nearby Mawenzi Peak for panoramic views

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters)
Resume the trek, crossing the lunar-like landscape of the Saddle
Ascend to Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt
Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit push
Overnight at Kibo Hut
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) and descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters)
Wake up before midnight for the summit attempt
Trek to Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters) on the crater rim at dawn
Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for a triumphant moment
Descend to Horombo Hut for overnight camping
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860 meters) and Departure
Descend through the moorland and rainforest zones
Reach the Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates
Say farewell to your guide and porters
Transfer back to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi or onward to your next destination.
